Give the kids space!

Campaign for safer cycling

The city is joining Cycling Scotland’s campaign to get more children on their bikes for the journey to and home from school.

Drivers are also being asked to give kids cycle space, so that the trip can be safe and pleasant.

Nationally, 50 per cent of children get less than the recommended one hour a day of moderate physical activity.

Nearly a quarter of primary school children are overweight and numbers are rising.

Cycling to school is an enjoyable, affordable way for children to get much-needed exercise.

It fosters independence and teaches life skills as well as giving children a role in improving their own environment and increasing their sense of wellbeing.

Schools within the Firrhill and Portobello areas will be targeted by the campaign, run in conjunction with Sustrans.

A series of events at schools will be held in these areas with some guest appearances by the popular Riderz cycling stunt team.

Radio Forth will also highlight the benefits of cycling to youngsters as well as encouraging adults to be more considerate on the roads.
