Gallery hosts Wegman's exhibition

City Art Centre

Edinburgh’s City Art Centre is being given a whole new lease of life.

After its first significant refurbishment for 20 years, the popular Market Street gallery will reopen its doors to the public at the end of July, boasting a new ground floor with greatly improved visitor facilities.

The gift shop – previously something of a ‘hidden gem’ when it occupied part of the second floor – will now be the first thing visitors see as they enter the centre.

The ground floor will also feature improved toilets, a relocated and improved reception area and new cloakroom facilities.

As home to Edinburgh’s nationally recognised art collection, the reopening of the City Art Centre will be welcomed by art lovers across the city and beyond.

These renovations will ensure the building is in tip-top condition and ready for a packed calendar of exhibitions from this summer.

Among the many wonderful shows will be:

William Wegman

First on the bill for the summer season is a quirky and visually stunning exhibition of photographs and videos by acclaimed US artist William Wegman, as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival.

William Wegman: Family Combinations is a witty and engaging show, devised especially for the City Art Centre and features more than 60 images of the artist’s beloved Weimaraner dogs.

The exhibitions consists of a variety of Polaroids, chromogenic, silver gelatin and digital prints, as well as a selection of humorous video clips – including clips Wegman made for the hit US children’s TV show, Sesame Street.

It’s Wegman’s first ever comprehensive solo show in Scotland and the only UK opportunity to catch this exceptional photographic display.

Born in Holyoke, Massachussetts, Wegman became known for his cutting-edge conceptual pictures, two of which are pictured below, and video in the 1970s.

The show will run from 31 July to 24 October.
