Riding of the Marches
Building on the success of last year’s event, the 2010 Riding of the Marches takes place once again in Edinburgh this September.
The tradition dates back to 1579, but prior to 2009 it had not been held in Edinburgh since 1946.
On the morning of the ride, 250 riders will set off across the city. The route for this year’s event is still being finalised, but will end on the Royal Mile, where upwards of 20,000 spectators are expected to meet the riders.
Every year, several towns in the Scottish Borders area take part in the Riding of the Marches. The event commemorates the historical practice of previous riders, who carried out the task to defend their common land and ensure their boundaries were free from invasion.
