99 new homes
Gracemount development gets the green light
Affordable housing
The green light has been given for the first 99 homes in Gracemount to be built as part of the first construction phase of the Council’s 21st Century Homes for Edinburgh Programme. Up to 215 homes will eventually be built on the site.
The final planning application was approved by the City of Edinburgh Council.
These will be the first new council homes built in Edinburgh for more than a generation as part of a programme to build 1,300 homes for sale and for rent across the capital.
This will see up to £150 million of Council-led investment in the regeneration of the Gracemount, North Sighthill and Pennywell and Muirhouse areas of the city.
These will contribute towards Edinburgh meeting the need for 16,600 new affordable homes over the next ten years.
The new homes in phase one will all be affordable with 67 council homes for rent, 20 for mid-rent and 12 for low-cost home ownership. There will be 26 one-bedroom, 40 two-bedroom and 27 three-bedroom flats and colony-style apartments, plus six-four bedroom houses.
Betty Stevenson, convener of Edinburgh Tenants Federation, said: “I think this a wonderful time for the city of Edinburgh to start to build houses again after a space of 30 years. I hope this is just the start of things to come because they are much needed for our growing communities and I’m looking forward to being around to see it happen.”
