The Royal Commonwealth Pool renovation is nearly complete

Edinburgh will once again have a sensational aquatics facility when the Royal Commonwealth Pool (RCP) reopens to the public in spring 2012.

The £37m refurbishment by GRAHAM Construction is in its final phase and Edinburgh diving star Grace Reid was given a special tour of the training and competition arena.

Fifteen-year-old Grace reached the springboard finals at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games and is set to dive for Scotland at the RCP during Glasgow 2014.

The RCP will host the diving events as part of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the British Swimming squad have selected the facility as the venue for their final training camp in July 2012 ahead of the London Olympic Games.

Edinburgh Leisure chief executive John Comiskey said he was delighted with the progress.

“The ever-popular RCP will continue to play a vital role in Edinburgh Leisure’s vision to make Edinburgh a more active and healthy city.”

A spokesperson for GRAHAM Construction said: “The new dive facility at the Royal Commonwealth Pool is a major milestone in the project and tangible evidence of the new pool taking shape.

“All construction work is now practically complete and our team is concentrating on final commissioning, including preparing lighting and heating.”

The refurbished RCP will feature:

  • A 50m, eight-lane pool for community and specialist swimming use with a boom capable of subdividing the pool into two areas
  • A reorientated 25m diving pool up to 5m deep with moveable floor which can be used for swimming when not in use for diving
  • A dry dive facility including trampoline and springboards to allow divers to practise out of the pool
  • A 25m pool with moveable floor to accommodate warm-up provision, swimming lessons and informal play utilising pool toys
  • A new dry, soft-play facility
  • A refurbished and expanded gym and fitness studios
  • A refurbished and redesigned changing village, meeting and conference rooms.
